According to the Plastic and Health Report, plastic poses a threat to human health at every stage of its life cycle. Dangerous chemical compounds are formed during the extraction and production of raw materials, new toxic substances are added to the plastic during the use, and when the plastic becomes garbage, it pollutes the environment and our food. Up to 4,000 chemicals can be used in the production of various types of plastics. After analyzing about 1,000 of them, scientists decided that at least 150 of them were dangerous. A link between the plastic and the nervous system diseases, cancer, especially leukemia, the decrease of reproductive function, and genetic mutations has been formed up today. In the modern world the use of plastic has a wide assortment: from the most popular packaging products to electronics, textiles and construction. Many products formerly made of glass, metal, wood and other materials are now made of plastic. The “Improvement of Plastic Processing Markets: Trends, Perspectives and Policy Responses” report of the OECD mentions the necessity to be focused on several areas, including the improvement of the collection and recycling of plastic waste, as well as the necessity of the reused and used less harmful plastics.
