— Each nation in the course of its historical development acquires a great number of features characteristic of the nation only and not pertained to any other, even to a genealogically related nation. Each language has its phraseology and its own the way of their translations. Set expressions are structurally, lexically and semantically fixed phrases or sentences having mostly the meaning, which is not made up by the sum of meanings of their component parts. An indispensable feature of set expressions are their figurative, i.e., metaphorical nature and usage. It is this nature that makes them distinguishable from structurally identical free combinations of words. As it has already been said above a proverb is an expression (i.e term or phrase) the meaning of which cannot be deduced from the literal definitions and the arrangement of its parts, but refers instead to a figurative meaning that is known only through conventional use. In linguistics, proverbs and sayings are widely assumed to be figures of speech that contradict the principle of compositionality, however some debate has recently arisen on this subject. There are different kinds of proverbs and sayings which express different fields. Proverbs and sayings hence tend to confuse those not already familiar with them. Down we’ll represent proverbs and sayings of different cultures that are connected with beauty. (The English examples are taken from http://proverbicals.com/beauty/ and the Armenian examples are taken from “Անգլերեն- հայերեն առածանի”,1992)
