The first observation needs to be given about political discourse is that it isn’t a genre, but a category of genres defined by a social domain, namely that of politics (Dijk 1998). Similarly the scientific discourse, educational discourse and legal discourse present the categories of discourse genres of the domains of science, education and law, correspondingly. Thus, the government deliberations, parliamentary disputes, the programs of parties, and speeches performed by politicians are among numerous genres belonging to the domain of politics. Political science suggests as lots of definitions of “politics” as there are political scientists, ranging from too common characterizations of politics in terms of authority or collective decision making, to the much more specific definition of politics as the set of activities politicians engaged in.
