Political discourse is a communicative act in which participants seek to influence, convince, or assign particular meanings to facts. Alternatively put, political discourse can be described as a linguistically manipulative tactic used to forward ideological objectives. The heterogeneous nature of political communication is reflected in the complex and diversified phenomenon of language use in political discourse. The capacity of political speech to sway public opinion through the application of linguistic tropes and techniques is one of its fundamental characteristics.
