Phraseological units in English and in Armenian (contrastive analysis)

The vocabulary of a language is enriched not only by words but also by phraseological units. A phraseological unit is a lexicalized, reproducible bilexemic or polylexemic word group in common use, which has relative syntactic and semantic stability, may be idiomatized, may carry connotations and may have an emphatic or intensifying function in a text. Phraseological units are word-groups that cannot be made in the process of speech. They exist in the language as ready-made units. Phraseological units express a single notion and are used in a sentence as one part of it. Nowdays translation of phraseological units is an important subject for contemporary translation studies. Therefore, this subject is being discussed by different linguists and translators, and it is closely connected with the fact that translators should interpret the meaning of the whole expression or a group of words and express the connotative and evaluative functions of the whole expression. Importance of phraseological units is great enough as they fill the gaps in the lexical system of the language which cannot completely provide the denomination of the new spheres of reality recognized by a person, and in many cases in a unique designation of subjects, properties, processes, conditions, situations.
