In this section we are going to analyze the noun + noun phrases used in the play “Death of a Salesman” written by famous American playwright and essayist Arthur Miller. This drama has been numbered on the short list of the best American plays of the twentieth century. We have chosen this work for our analysis because it is rich with noun + noun phrases.
For this purpose we are going to:

  1. read the play in English and find the noun + noun phrases used in it;
  2. describe the different ways of using noun + noun phrases;
  3. draw attention to the meaning of some idiomatic and slang expressions used in it.
    We will begin our analysis by introducing the original text for two purposes: first, for the readers to understand what it is about; and second, to analyze the noun + noun phrases used in it. Below we shall give the sentences or pasages with the noun phrases found, along with a brief background for each of them to explain why we have considered them to be relevant for this study. The first noun phrase we come across while reading the text is the title itself. The noun phrase “death of a salesman” has several layers of meaning. The most obvious one is that it refers to Willy Loman’s, the salesman’s actual physical death. It also refers to the death of Willy’s dream to be a financially successful man and a sucessful father. By the end of the play he loses his job and becomes broken. Willy hopes to leave some legacy to his son Biff in the form of life insurance money by committing a suicide, which would give the latter one a chance to succeed in the business world. But it doesn’t happen, either.
