Listening is the ability to identify and understand what others are saying. This involves understanding a speaker’s accent or pronunciation, his grammar and his vocabulary, and grasping his meaning. An able listener is capable of doing these four things simultaneously. Without listening there will be no basis for the other developmental milestone in a human being, be it cognitive or language development. Listening paves the way for productive participation in life for all human being. Listening is the most important skill for language learning because it is the most widely used language skill in daily life. It develops faster than the three other language skills, which in turn suggests that it can facilitate the emergence of the other language skills. Listening involves a sender, a message, and a receiver (the listener). Listeners often must process messages as they come, even if they are still processing what they have just heard, without backtracking or looking ahead. In addition, listeners must cope with the sender’s choice of vocabulary, structure, and rate of delivery. The complexity of the listening process is magnified in second language contexts, where the receiver also has incomplete control of the language. Listening has long been the neglected skill in second language acquisition, research, teaching and assessment. However, in recent years there has been an increased focus on L2 listening ability because of its perceived importance in language learning and acquisition. The theme of the paper is “Teaching and Testing Listening ”. The aim of the current work is to consider listening comprehension, methods of teaching and testing listening.
