The metaphor is a figure of speech which makes an implicit, implied or hidden comparison between two different things that are not related to each other but which share some common characteristics. It is one of the most commonly used tools in literature.
The aim of our work is to study the use of the metaphors and metaphorical expressions used in the short story “The Old Man and the Sea” written by Ernest Hemingway.
The objectives of our research are:

  1. to give the general outline of the language of metaphors;
  2. to define its main features in English;
  3. to analyze the metaphorical language used in the short story “The Old Man and the Sea” by Ernest Hemingway.
    Chapter one presents the notion of a metaphor and gives the classification of the main types of metaphors in English. It also explains the difference between the metaphors, metonymies, similes and analogies because the metaphors are often compared with these stylistic devices. Chapter two explores the language of metaphors and its linguistic features. It also gives the stylistic analysis of the metaphors and metaphorical expressions used in the short story “The Old Man and the Sea” written by famous American journalist, novelist and short-story writer Ernest Hemingway.
