There have been many articles and reports in the press about the invention of SMS in which the term “invention” has often been used in a very loose way. In order to understand what has happened and which claims are justified, it is necessary for us to clarify the term “invention,” first of all, and gain a precise understanding before dealing with the matter further in this section. An invention is the discovery or the creation of a new configuration, composition of matter, device or process. Some inventions are based on some pre-existing models or ideas; other inventions are some radical breakthroughs extending the boundaries of human knowledge and experience. The overwhelming market success of short text messages after 2000 led the press to show a great interest in finding out about the origin of SMS. The newspapers started searching for its inventor, and lots of articles appeared about the invention of SMS soon. Two stories gained too much popularity. One of them stated that the SMS was discovered by a group of test engineers. This storyline was developed in the UK. It was repeated when the 15-th anniversary of SMS was celebrated in December, 2007. Some newspapers went further and described the event of the first message transmission in a number of ways.
