Speaking is an interactive process. Typically, it takes place in real time and requires the ability to communicate with other people. The oral language differs from the written language in its typical grammatical, lexical and discourse patterns. The grammar of the spoken language differs in a number of ways from that of the written language. Hence, the study of grammar may not be the most efficient preparation for speaking. Speaking represents a real challenge to most language learners. This is a skill which needs to be developed and practiced independently of the grammar curriculum.
