Structural-Semantic Analysis of Phraseological Units with Color Names in English and Armenian

The presence of 12 basic colors is the main difference of the Armenian and English languages in the issue of color-formation. Different colors differently affect the human soul — inspire or oppress, give rise to a feeling of warmth or coolness. People from time immemorial attached special importance to reading the “language of colors”, which was reflected in ancient myths, folk legends, fairy tales. So, the main meanings of the color in English are as follows in some idioms. Let us analyze and discuss each color and the phraseological units with these colors in details. WHITE, RED, BLACK, GREEN, BROWN, YELLOW, GREY The ancient symbolic meanings of White are mainly positive: kindness, gaiety, purity, tenderness, chastity With white color there is a large number of idioms and phraseology in English. So white color as the color of pure thoughts is manifested in idioms: “to be whiter than white” — “to be extremely honest, moral”; “Lily-white reputation” “unblemished reputation”; “White hands” — “honesty, innocence, innocence”. Red color is associated in the minds of people with blood, fire, sun, autumn leaves. The oldest myths associated with the red the creation of a man. Brown color is considered a symbol of despondency and depression. Yellow produces a warm and pleasant impression. This is the color of gold and autumn. “Yellow boy” — (obsolete expression) is a gold, gold coin. But it is the yellow color in phraseology that is extremely rare. The color “gray” is associated with old age and wisdom. Gray is the color of renunciation, humility, melancholy, indifference. This color most often symbolizes colorlessness, the uncertainty of the “gray area” is the area of uncertainty in knowledge.
